Arise 2020 Summit: The Cool Visioning Exercise

Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting a session with the wonderful Amanda Downs at the Arise 2020 Summit at Reading Town Hall.

The Arise Summit was for the Sister Sister Network, a fantastic organisation founded by Aduke Onafowokan, which is dedicated to unlocking the potential of female leadership in key areas of life. The annual event brings together a community of innovative minds to explore ideas that can help empower women to rediscover their purpose, and solve some of the major challenges they face in areas of life such as business, industry, politics and public life.

Amanda and I hosted a session called ‘A Conversation on Visioning and Objective Setting.’ In response to our fantastic audience giving us a resounding ‘YES!’, we instead delivered speed visioning and objective setting exercises, which were great fun!

One of the exercises I led was the Cool Visioning Exercise, which teaches us that we can bust through our own limiting beliefs. I talk about this exercise in my book, ‘Insights into Liberating Leadership’. The exercise is on pages 37-38 if you already have your copy – if you don’t then you can order your free copy here.

This is a really fun exercise to do in a room full of people, so the Arise Summit was the perfect opportunity to give it a go! Everyone in the room was on their feet doing the exercise, and once they had visioned moving their arm around their body further than they thought they were capable of, everyone was surprised by how easy it seemed. We even had a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ coming from the audience!

The exercise really helped our audience to understand that much of what limits us and holds us back from doing things is in our minds, and helps people to become liberated by letting go of their own mental barriers.

I later found out after the session that Michelle Jordan from BBC Radio Berkshire was present during our session. Michelle took me aside at the end of the conference and asked me more about the exercise we had just done, as she is training for a triathlon on 19th August 2020.

She asked me if I would be willing to share the exercise for her radio programme on 29th January. You can listen to her programme, ‘Michelle On The Move’, and my contribution here (2:32:40).

When we’re not worried about what we’re going to hurt or what we’re going to do, when we’ve already imagined going past that point, we then know we can do it.

Aduke also discusses Arise 2020 in more depth with Michelle on her programme, which you can listen to at 2:52:65.

I now know Michelle will smash the triathlon, as she is well ahead with the visioning and goal setting for it, and now will set a vision (and get a medal) for each leg!
